Origins of Salt Therapy
Salt therapy, also called Halotherapy (from the Greek word “halos”,meaning salt), is a drug-free and completely natural therapy with no side effects and is suitable for all ages. Halotherapy stems from Speleotherapy (from the Greek word“speleo” meaning cave). This natural therapy dating back over 200 years, utilised the beneficial properties of salt mines. Salt mines have been used as a positive form of therapy dating back to medieval times where monks would take the sick to the salt caves to breathe in the salt particles that came from the monks crushing the stalactites. Even today Speleotherapy is very popular in European and the Himalayan Mountains.
Our salt rooms
In September 2012 we opened the first Salt Therapy rooms in Adelaide, South Australia. Our salt rooms have been purposefully built ensuring high standards. We fully control and manage the correct micro-climate in each salt room for maximum therapeutic benefit. Our salt rooms are clean and relaxing, supplying a constant fresh dried air, saturated with pre-defined and controlled amounts of dry salt aerosol.
At Salt Serenity we have an adult room and a kids room providing therapy for ages 6 months onwards.
Our adult rooms is quiet allowing you to relax at get the utmost benefit of your salt therapy session. On the other hand, our kids room has been specially designed with books, toys and a television. The kids will be busy with things to play and do that it wont feel like a therapy session for them. Please note that children up to the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
What is Salt Therapy?
At Salt Serenity, the salt therapy rooms simulate the micro-climate found in natural salt caves. During each session a specialised medical device, grinds pharmaceutical grade salt into microscopic particles and releases them into the room. The particles are also negatively charged to provide added benefit during your salt therapy session.
A laser sensor in the room monitors the saturation of a predefined and controllable amount of high quality dry salt aerosol to ensure the air you breathe is always perfectly balanced for optimum therapeutic benefit.
How Salt Therapy works
Our salt rooms use specially designed medical devices that grind pure pharmaceutical grade salt – free from contaminants and pollutants into fine particles of between 1 and 5 microns. These particles are then dispersed into the salt rooms to simulate a salt cave climate. The device also imparts a negative charge to the salt particles. This ionised air (consisting of microscopic particles of dry salt aerosol) that is being breathed deep into the lungs provides the perfect therapeutic environment for the relief of various ailments and also improves immunity, health and general well being.
In our salt rooms, clients sit for 45 minute sessions in our zero gravity recliners (recline is an option). This reduces pressure on the spine, allowing easier relaxation whilst listening to music or simply reading. The therapy rejuvenates you as you breathe in the negative ionised microscopic salt particles.
By breathing at your normal pace and not doing any form of forced breathing, this allows the dry salt aerosol you are inhaling to reach not only the main tract and bronchi but also the deepest part of the lung – the bronchioles and alveoli. Based on clinical studies, inhaling dry salt aerosol reduces inflammation of the whole respiratory tract. When salt particles are inhaled and deposited in the bronchial tree system and on the mucus, the mucus starts to break down and clients find it much easier to remove by coughing. This will improve your immune system and also provide a general sense of well being.
How does Salt Therapy treat respiratory and skin conditions?
- These particles are small enough to be inhaled into the deepest part of the lungs and penetrate through the bronchial tree and into the alveoli. Salt Therapy has been shown to eliminate inhaled airborne allergens from the airways with studies showing an estimated efficacy of between 75 – 98%.
- Dry sodium chloride aerosol also has anti-bacterial properties and assists in cleansing the microbial flora of the respiratory tract, reducing inflammation of the airways and enabling the restoration of normal mucociliary clearance of the bronchi. This process increases the body’s natural resistance to respiratory tract infections.
- Salt Therapy has been clinically proven to improve mucociliary clearance, kill bacteria and reduce inflammation of the respiratory tract. Salt Therapy is also proven to reduce edema and irritation for a number of skin conditions including eczema and dermatitis.
